AI at CodeHS: Common Questions

Why teach AI in K-12?

Incorporating AI education into K-12 classrooms prepares students for a technology-driven world. In a computer science classroom, students learn that what looks like magic is really just programs and algorithms. Beyond CS, AI literacy builds problem-solving and critical thinking, prompts ethical conversations, and sparks creativity.

Do we have to use AI at all?

No. Every AI feature on CodeHS is optional and can be turned off by the teacher, for a whole class, or for an individual student. Plenty of schools run CodeHS with zero AI enabled and still get the full curriculum, IDE, grading, and reporting.

Is student data shared with anyone outside CodeHS?

No. Student data is never sold and never shared with third parties, and it is not used to train AI models. Our practices support your school's FERPA requirements, and CodeHS is built for schools first. See our privacy center and AI center for the full detail.

Can I enable AI for some students and not others?

Yes. Controls are granular, so you can enable a tool for one class and not another, and Vibe Coding and AI Hints can be controlled student by student.

How does AI affect academic integrity on CodeHS?

CodeHS includes academic integrity tooling alongside the AI features, so students keep doing the learning and teachers have the tools to see what is actually happening in their classroom.

Will my students see things that AI generates on CodeHS without the teacher knowing about it?

No. Nothing AI-generated reaches a student unless you turn it on or sign off on it. AI hints only appear if you enable them for a class or a student, and AI grade suggestions are drafts you review and release.

Does AI cost extra?

Most AI tools are included with CodeHS Pro, and AI Creator is an add-on. Vibe Coding and Ask AI come with usage limits, and additional AI Credits can be purchased. We also have free AI courses and projects. Request a quote and we'll scope exactly what your school needs.

Is learning to code still worth it with AI?

Absolutely. AI tools can help write code, but they need people who understand what to build and why. Knowing how to code lets you direct AI effectively, evaluate its output, and build things AI can't do on its own. Think of it like writing. Even with spell-check and AI assistants, understanding how to write well is more valuable than ever.
