FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can students use Scratch-based coding in schools with strict student data privacy policies?

Yes. CodeHS Elementary includes its own Scratch-based and ScratchJr-based coding environments, embedded directly in the CodeHS platform. Students never visit an outside website and never create an external account, there's no public sharing or commenting, and the CodeHS privacy policy covers everything students make.

Does CodeHS Elementary work on Chromebooks and iPads?

Yes. CodeHS elementary tools run in a web browser with nothing to download or install, so the same lessons and coding projects work on Chromebooks, iPads, laptops, and desktops. CodeHS also publishes guidance for teaching on iPads and smaller screens, with layout tips that help students work comfortably on a tablet.

How do elementary students log in to CodeHS without typing a password?

CodeHS gives elementary teachers three ways for students to sign in without typing anything: scanning a printable QR code, clicking your name from a class list, and choosing a picture password. Google single sign-on is available too for schools that use it. Teachers pick the method per section, print login information for the whole class, and can reset a student's picture password anytime.

Can CodeHS elementary sections be rostered from Google Classroom?

Yes. When a teacher creates an elementary section, they can choose Import From Google Classroom, and CodeHS creates and enrolls the student accounts automatically. CodeHS elementary also supports Clever, ClassLink, Google single sign-on, OneRoster CSV, and manual or CSV rosters, so sections can be built however your district already manages classes.

Is CodeHS elementary curriculum available in Spanish?

Yes. Teachers set a preferred language for each student, and CodeHS shows student-facing content, coding programs, and translated starter code in Spanish wherever a Spanish version exists. Lesson slide decks that have a Spanish version can be opened or copied in Spanish straight from the lesson plan.

Does CodeHS have physical computing and robotics lessons for elementary students?

Yes. CodeHS elementary lessons support a range of classroom robots and hardware, including Bee-Bot, Code & Go Robot Mouse, KIBO, Ozobot, Sphero, Makey Makey, and LEGO Education SPIKE, plus screen-free unplugged activities. Many are built for K-2 students who aren't reading yet, so physical computing can start well before students are coding on screens.
