5th grade students build games like Snake and Pinball using loops, variables, operators, and conditionals, and design solutions for accessibility. They use coding to practice multi-digit multiplication, fractions, and decimals, model Earth systems, ecosystems, and the water cycle, build punctuation games, and create a Revolutionary War timeline and an interactive map of the 13 colonies. Students also analyze data, explore networks and innovation, and examine AI by analyzing how it learns, making ethical choices about AI products, and designing an AI chatbot.
Most lessons in Utah Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 5th Grade use coding to teach or reinforce grade-level content in math, science, English language arts, and social studies, so teachers can integrate computer science into the subjects they already teach. Cross-curricular projects such as digital flashcards, Venn diagrams, and cause-and-effect programs can be adapted to any subject. Additional strands build core programming skills through games and projects, and Digital Literacy and Artificial Intelligence strands cover computing systems, online safety, data, and AI.
Utah Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 5th Grade provides about 36 hours of instruction, enough for a full school year. Lessons are organized into strands by subject, so teachers can choose and order lessons to fit their curriculum and schedule. Every lesson is built in a ready-to-teach format, with step-by-step videos that walk students through the lesson. Lessons are designed to be teacher-led, and a self-paced option is also available. Some strands end with a short quiz that can be assigned digitally, played as a QuizBuzz activity, or printed.
No. There are no prerequisites, and the course is designed to support all learners regardless of prior computer science experience. The Getting Started with Coding lessons introduce key computer science vocabulary and skills before students apply them across subjects.
Utah Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 5th Grade is aligned to the Utah Computer Science standards, and each lesson identifies the standard or standards it addresses to support planning.
