  • Getting Started with Coding

Students learn to log in to CodeHop, create their first programs, and debug events and sequences.

  • Coding in Math

Students use coding to explore adding within 20, three-digit place value, story problems, money, and shapes, and create their own story problem.

  • Coding in Science

Students model changing landforms, erosion, seed dispersal, and properties of matter, and design solutions inspired by nature.

  • Coding in ELA

Students animate stories, practice punctuation, create an original fiction story, and explore a fashion retail career.

  • Coding in Social Studies

Students explore how communities modify their environment and how technology impacts the world.

  • More Coding Lessons & Projects

Students use the design process, message events, pages, loops, and variables to build games, an adventure game, and a digital greeting card.

  • Digital Literacy

Students explore how computers connect, create strong passwords, manage files, explore networks, and analyze data and research.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What will students learn in Utah Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 2nd Grade?

2nd grade students build games and animations using message events, pages, loops, and variables, and practice debugging and the design process. They apply coding to three-digit place value, story problems, money, and shapes, model landforms, erosion, seed dispersal, and matter, animate fiction stories, and explore how communities change their environment. Students also create strong passwords, manage files, explore networks and data, and see how machine learning recognizes drawings.

How does Utah Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 2nd Grade connect computer science to other subjects?

Most lessons in Utah Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 2nd Grade use coding to teach or reinforce grade-level content in math, science, English language arts, and social studies, so teachers can integrate computer science into the subjects they already teach. Additional strands build core programming skills through games and projects, and Digital Literacy and Artificial Intelligence strands cover computing systems, online safety, data, and AI.

How is Utah Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 2nd Grade structured?

Utah Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 2nd Grade provides about 36 hours of instruction, enough for a full school year. Lessons are organized into strands by subject, so teachers can choose and order lessons to fit their curriculum and schedule. Every lesson is built in a ready-to-teach format, with step-by-step videos that walk students through the lesson. Lessons are designed to be teacher-led, and a self-paced option is also available. Some strands end with a short quiz that can be assigned digitally, played as a QuizBuzz activity, or printed.

Do students need prior experience to take Utah Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 2nd Grade?

No. There are no prerequisites, and the course is designed to support all learners regardless of prior computer science experience. The Getting Started with Coding lessons introduce the CodeHop coding environment before students apply their skills across subjects.

What standards is Utah Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 2nd Grade aligned to?

Utah Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 2nd Grade is aligned to the Utah Computer Science standards, and each lesson identifies the standard or standards it addresses to support planning.
