This course is designed to provide computer science instruction for Nova Scotia 5th grade students. Students learn programming and principles of computer science, including: computing systems, networks and the Internet, data analysis, algorithms and programming, and impacts of computing.

UNITS - 10 (31 lessons)
This module reviews core programming vocabulary, the coordinate plane, and drawing tools by having students create and program sea creature characters.
This module examines how screen time affects learning, reviews computing system components and troubleshooting, and applies computational thinking to design a neighborhood.
This module builds event-based programming skills and teaches students to compare and refine multiple algorithms for efficiency.
This module teaches looping techniques through pen-based turtle graphics and multi-scene loop animations.
This module teaches conditional logic and operators through maze and coin-flip programs while emphasizing proper attribution when creating or remixing programs.
This module teaches variables, comparison operators, and lists by having students control dance parameters, build game-ending mechanics, and create a shopping simulator.
This module introduces clones, classes and objects with randomization, and functions with input to build interactive games and personalized programs.
This culminating module uses the design thinking process to design an app that solves a user's need.
This module builds research and data analysis skills including proper attribution, drawing conclusions from data, and visualizing inquiry results in a line graph.
This module covers advanced digital citizenship and technology-impact topics including online safety, digital reputation, global collaboration, productivity software use, and ethical evaluation of AI products.

A one-year course built around CodeHop, a full block-based coding platform. Students build computational thinking and problem-solving skills while creating interactive projects, animations, and games.
36 hours total, with lessons around 45 minutes each. It's teacher-led, using an "I do, we do, you do" approach so students gain independence gradually.
CodeHop, a block-based coding platform where students write and run programs that are saved to their own account. Students also use the pen tool to create turtle-style drawings and animations.
Students work with loops, conditionals, variables, lists, clones, functions, and an early introduction to classes and objects, applying everything in a final app design project. A dedicated data unit and an extended digital literacy unit cover topics like digital reputation, global collaboration, and productivity software.
Students analyze the benefits and challenges of different AI products from multiple perspectives, building critical thinking skills around emerging technology.
