This course is designed to provide computer science instruction for Nova Scotia 4th grade students. Students learn programming and principles of computer science, including: computing systems, networks and the Internet, data analysis, algorithms and programming, and impacts of computing.

UNITS - 10 (34 lessons)
This module reviews foundational computer science vocabulary and programming skills, including using the coordinate plane to create animations.
This module addresses healthy screen-time habits, computing system components and troubleshooting, and computational thinking through designing a school.
This module builds programming skills with event blocks, algorithm design and evaluation, and broadcast messages, applying them to create a culturally-themed choose-your-own-path game.
This module teaches use of different loop types to build a catching game and develops debugging skills to fix maze programs.
This module teaches if/then conditional logic through modifying game effects with peer feedback and building an interactive drawing app with keyboard and mouse inputs and loops.
This module teaches students to create and use variables to track values, apply multiple conditionals, and use lists to build a spelling bee game.
This module introduces clones for animation and functions with boolean and number inputs to build password-checking and drawing programs.
This culminating module applies the design thinking process to redesign a game for improved accessibility and usability.
This module builds data literacy and research skills including source attribution, evaluating data reliability, and creating interactive programs that visualize investigative data.
This module covers digital citizenship and computing impact topics including digital footprints, online safety, collaboration, productivity software, ethical use of generative AI, and file and data management.

A one-year course built around CodeHop, a full block-based coding platform. Students build computational thinking and problem-solving skills while creating interactive projects, animations, and games.
36 hours total, with lessons around 45 minutes each. It's teacher-led, using an "I do, we do, you do" approach so students gain independence gradually.
CodeHop, a block-based coding platform where students write and run programs that are saved to their own account.
Students work with events, algorithms, loops, conditionals, variables, lists, clones, and functions, applying them in an accessibility-focused culmination project. A dedicated data unit and an extended digital literacy unit round out the year, covering everything from digital footprints to productivity software.
As part of digital literacy, students complete a class code of conduct for using generative AI, building habits for using these tools responsibly and ethically.
