It's a one-year computer science course for 2nd grade that introduces foundational programming concepts through a block-based programming language. Students build on earlier coding skills to develop computational thinking and problem-solving while creating interactive projects, animations, and games, with an emphasis on creativity and collaboration.
The course totals 36 contact hours, with each lesson running about 45 minutes. Teaching one lesson per week covers a full school year. It is teacher-led, using ready-to-use lesson plans that follow a consistent Introduction, Guided Practice, Independent Practice, Extension, and Reflection structure.
Students use the same block-based programming interface as earlier grades, writing and running programs saved in their own accounts. An optional review unit helps students who need extra practice navigating the interface, using events, loops, and message blocks before diving into new content.
Students expand their core programming skills with grid-based positioning, algorithms, loops, and message events that coordinate action across multiple pages, while strengthening debugging skills throughout. Digital literacy lessons cover secure logins, networks, data storage, and evaluating trustworthy sources online. The course wraps up with productivity software covering word processing, presentations, and spreadsheets.
Building on the word processing introduced in earlier grades, 2nd grade adds presentations and spreadsheets. Students create a document about their favorite seasons, build a presentation about their favorite things, and present data on class pets using a spreadsheet.
