The Louisiana Grades 6-8 Computer Science course introduces students to a broad range of computer science topics, including Karel programming, turtle graphics with Tracy the Turtle, web design, game design, digital citizenship, and data analysis. Students build creativity and problem-solving skills while creating programs, websites, and data-driven projects.

    Students learn the basics of JavaScript as they follow Karel the Dog on two fun-filled adventures. Recommended for early middle school.

    Students learn the basics of JavaScript as they follow Karel the Dog on two fun-filled adventures.

  • Tracy the Turtle Adventures

    Students will learn how to use basic commands, variables, and functions in their programs using the Python programming language. Recommended for early middle school.

  • Exploring Computing

    Students explore different technologies and the impact they have on our world.

  • Exploring Code with Karel

    Students learn the basics of programming by giving Karel the Dog commands in a grid world.

  • Exploring the Internet

    Students are introduced to network protocols and different strategies used to protect online information.

  • Exploring Digital Citizenship

    Students learn about Internet etiquette and how to stay safe on the world wide web.

  • Exploring Art with Code

    Students explore the intersection of art and technology by creating art programs using p5.js.

  • Exploring Game Design

    Students learn the basics of video game design elements, game mechanics, and sprite and world design.

  • Exploring Web Design 1

    Students explore HTML and CSS styling as they work to create their homepage.

  • Exploring Data and Spreadsheets

    Students explore data and basic sheet functions to complete a project where they use a device to collect and analyze data to find an answer to a question they have.

  • Exploring Web Design 2

    Students explore the basics of web aesthetics and design principles. This module culminates in a project that will guide them through the web planning process and create a multi-page website.

No. This course is designed for students with no prior coding experience.

What programming language(s) does the course use?

Students learn multiple programming languages throughout the course, including JavaScript, Python, and HTML & CSS. Using multiple languages helps students understand that the same computational thinking skills apply across different programming environments and real-world applications.

What concepts are taught?

Students learn core programming concepts such as sequencing, loops, conditionals, functions, and debugging. The course also explores broader computer science topics including computer hardware and software, the internet, cybersecurity, digital citizenship, web design, game design, and data analysis with spreadsheets.

How long is the course?

The course is designed to provide approximately 120 instructional hours. Each module contains 10 hours of content, giving teachers flexibility to customize the course. You can teach the full course as a year-long offering or select individual modules to create a semester- or quarter-length course that best fits your schedule and instructional goals.
