This course is aligned to LA computer science standards and is designed to provide instruction for Louisiana kindergarten students. It is meant to be taught approximately once per week. This course also includes interdisciplinary lessons in math and science to support thinking across disciplines.

UNITS - 8 (34 lessons)
Students get comfortable logging in and moving around the CodeHopJr Playground before the course begins.
Students learn what a computer is, identify hardware and software, and figure out what to do when a device stops working.
Students explore how people and devices connect to share information, and learn which personal information should stay private.
Students collect and sort data to answer questions about their world, and learn that computers store information as files.
Students build their first block-based programs using events, sequences, loops, and variables, and practice finding and fixing mistakes.
Students consider how computers shape everyday life and what it means to be kind and safe online.
Students apply coding to kindergarten math, programming scenes that model shapes, counting, and comparing numbers.
Students use programming to explore science topics such as living and nonliving things, weather, and how animals survive.
The course covers five required units that follow the Louisiana computer science standards: Computing Systems, Networks and the Internet, Data and Analysis, Algorithms and Programming, and Impacts of Computing. Kindergarten students learn what a computer is, how devices connect to share information, how to sort and read simple data, how to build block-based programs with events and loops, and how to be safe and kind online.
The course is aligned to the Louisiana K-5 Student Standards for Computer Science. Its five required units are organized around the same categories as the standards -- Computing Systems, Networks and the Internet, Data and Analysis, Algorithms and Programming, and Impacts of Computing -- and every lesson that meets a specific standard lists that standard code beside the lesson title in the syllabus.
No. There are no prerequisites. The course is built for complete beginners and opens with an optional introductory lesson that walks students through logging in and using the CodeHopJr Playground.
Lessons run about 30 minutes and are designed to be taught once per week across a full school year. Kindergarten includes 27 required class sessions, or roughly 36 sessions if you also teach the optional math and science lessons.
Students program in CodeHopJr, a block-based coding environment that runs in a web browser. Nothing needs to be installed, and student work saves automatically to their own accounts.
