This course is aligned to LA computer science standards and is designed to provide instruction for Louisiana third grade students. It is meant to be taught approximately once per week. This course also includes interdisciplinary lessons in math and science to support thinking across disciplines.

UNITS - 8 (37 lessons)
Students get comfortable logging in and moving around the CodeHop Playground before the course begins.
Students identify the parts of a computing system and practice solving simple hardware and software problems.
Students learn what cybersecurity means, build strong usernames and passwords, and model how messages travel across a network.
Students evaluate data for reliability, draw conclusions from it, and carry out their own survey investigation.
Students program with loops, conditionals, variables, and lists, and apply design thinking to solve a real problem.
Students examine how technology and culture shape each other and practice communicating and collaborating responsibly online.
Students apply coding to third grade math, modeling measurement, multiplication, and classifying shapes.
Students use programming to explore science topics such as life cycles, adaptations, the water cycle, and fossils.
The course covers five required units that follow the Louisiana computer science standards: Computing Systems, Networks and the Internet, Data and Analysis, Algorithms and Programming, and Impacts of Computing. Third grade students learn cybersecurity basics, evaluate data for reliability, program with loops and conditionals, and apply design thinking to make a tool more accessible.
The course is aligned to the Louisiana K-5 Student Standards for Computer Science. Its five required units are organized around the same categories as the standards -- Computing Systems, Networks and the Internet, Data and Analysis, Algorithms and Programming, and Impacts of Computing -- and every lesson that meets a specific standard lists that standard code beside the lesson title in the syllabus.
No. There are no prerequisites. The course is designed to support all learners regardless of prior computer science experience, and it opens with an optional introductory lesson covering how to log in and use the CodeHop Playground.
Lessons run about 45 minutes and are designed to be taught once per week across a full school year. Third grade includes 30 required class sessions, or roughly 40 sessions if you also teach the optional math and science lessons.
Yes. The Networks and the Internet unit introduces cybersecurity, teaches students to recognize online threats, and has them build strong usernames and passwords. The Impacts of Computing unit adds digital etiquette, spotting cyberbullying, attributing online sources, and making responsible choices online.
