This course is aligned to LA computer science standards and is designed to provide instruction for Louisiana second grade students. It is meant to be taught approximately once per week. This course also includes interdisciplinary lessons in math and science to support thinking across disciplines.

UNITS - 8 (36 lessons)
Students get comfortable logging in, exploring the CodeHopJr Playground, and building a first scene before the course begins.
Students compare types of hardware and software and learn to tell a hardware problem apart from a software problem.
Students model how networks share information between devices and practice keeping their login information secure.
Students run their own surveys, look for patterns in the results, and present findings using both programs and spreadsheets.
Students build more complex programs with loops, message events, and variables while debugging code and responding to peer feedback.
Students compare life with and without computing systems and learn what responsible digital citizenship means.
Students apply coding to second grade math, modeling story problems, place value, 3D shapes, and telling time.
Students use programming to explore science topics such as designs drawn from nature, changing landforms, moon phases, and seed dispersal.
The course covers five required units that follow the Louisiana computer science standards: Computing Systems, Networks and the Internet, Data and Analysis, Algorithms and Programming, and Impacts of Computing. Second grade students compare hardware and software, model how networks move data, run their own surveys, program with loops and message events, and practice responsible digital citizenship.
The course is aligned to the Louisiana K-5 Student Standards for Computer Science. Its five required units are organized around the same categories as the standards -- Computing Systems, Networks and the Internet, Data and Analysis, Algorithms and Programming, and Impacts of Computing -- and every lesson that meets a specific standard lists that standard code beside the lesson title in the syllabus.
Yes. The Data and Analysis unit includes a lesson where second grade students use spreadsheet software to organize and present real data, alongside lessons on running a survey, spotting patterns in results, and managing saved files.
Lessons run about 45 minutes and are designed to be taught once per week across a full school year. Second grade includes 27 required class sessions, or roughly 38 sessions if you also teach the optional math and science lessons.
Students program in CodeHopJr, a block-based coding environment that runs in a web browser. Nothing needs to be installed, and student work saves automatically to their own accounts.
