This course is aligned to LA computer science standards and is designed to provide instruction for Louisiana first grade students. It is meant to be taught approximately once per week. This course also includes interdisciplinary lessons in math and science to support thinking across disciplines.

UNITS - 8 (38 lessons)
Students get comfortable logging in, exploring the CodeHopJr Playground, and building a first scene before the course begins.
Students compare hardware and software, match the right tool to a task, and learn how to spot a software problem.
Students explain how networks carry messages between people and practice making responsible choices online.
Students collect data and present it in both programs and spreadsheets, and learn how computers save and organize files.
Students program with events, messages, sequences, and variables while practicing debugging and the design process.
Students look at how computing shapes their community and what safe, respectful technology use looks like.
Students apply coding to first grade math, modeling equal parts, place value, comparing numbers, and money.
Students use programming to explore science topics such as animal traits, motion, plant needs, light, and sound.
The course covers five required units that follow the Louisiana computer science standards: Computing Systems, Networks and the Internet, Data and Analysis, Algorithms and Programming, and Impacts of Computing. First grade students compare hardware and software, model how networks carry messages, collect and graph data, program with events and variables, and learn what responsible technology use means.
The course is aligned to the Louisiana K-5 Student Standards for Computer Science. Its five required units are organized around the same categories as the standards -- Computing Systems, Networks and the Internet, Data and Analysis, Algorithms and Programming, and Impacts of Computing -- and every lesson that meets a specific standard lists that standard code beside the lesson title in the syllabus.
No. The Thinking Across Disciplines lessons in math and science are optional. Teaching the five standards-aligned units is what is required to fully meet the Louisiana computer science standards. The optional lessons can be taught in any order and integrated throughout the school year as needed.
Lessons run about 45 minutes and are designed to be taught once per week across a full school year. First grade includes 26 required class sessions, or roughly 39 sessions if you also teach the optional math and science lessons.
Students program in CodeHopJr, a block-based coding environment that runs in a web browser. Nothing needs to be installed, and student work saves automatically to their own accounts.
