Elementary CS Instructional Strategies

In this course, teachers will explore instructional strategies to engage elementary students in computer science. Teachers will learn how to scaffold and differentiate CS content, use collaboration in elementary classrooms, explore culturally-relevant pedagogy, how to integrate interdisciplinary lessons, use physical computing and explore open-ended projects.

  • Getting Started with Instructional Strategies for Elementary CS Instruction

    This module includes an overview of the Instructional Strategies for Elementary CS Instruction Course and the course syllabus. You will also learn how to get help in your PD course, how to use the CodeHS Knowledge Base, and how to connect with other CodeHS educators.

  • Collaboration Strategies

    This module introduces educators to effective collaboration strategies for elementary computer science classrooms. Teachers will explore techniques to encourage teamwork, communication, and peer learning, helping students build essential collaborative skills. The focus is on creating structured, supportive environments where students can work together productively and inclusively.

  • Differentiation Strategies

    This module helps educators implement differentiation strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of elementary computer science students. Teachers will learn how to adjust instruction, assignments, and support based on students’ readiness, interests, and learning profiles. The goal is to ensure all students can access and succeed in computer science through personalized and flexible teaching approaches.

  • The Inclusive CS Classroom

    This module prepares educators to build inclusive computer science classrooms that support all learners. Teachers will explore strategies for removing barriers, fostering a sense of belonging, and addressing the needs of students from diverse backgrounds and abilities. The focus is on creating an environment where every student feels empowered to participate and thrive in CS learning.

  • Interdisciplinary CS Lessons

    This module guides educators in designing interdisciplinary computer science lessons that connect CS concepts with other subject areas. Teachers will learn how to integrate computing into math, science, language arts, and more, making learning more meaningful and engaging for elementary students. The goal is to show how computer science can enhance cross-curricular understanding and creativity.

  • Physical Computing in the Elementary Classroom

    This module introduces educators to physical computing as a hands-on way to teach computer science in elementary classrooms. Teachers will explore tools and activities that connect code to tangible outcomes using devices like micro\:bits or robotics kits. The focus is on fostering engagement, creativity, and problem-solving by bringing code to life through interactive, physical experiences.

  • Open-Ended Projects in the Elementary Classroom

    This module helps educators incorporate open-ended projects into elementary computer science instruction to promote creativity and deeper learning. Teachers will learn how to design flexible project frameworks that encourage student choice, exploration, and problem-solving. The goal is to empower students to apply their CS knowledge in meaningful, personalized ways.

  • Course Wrap-Up

    The Course Wrap-Up module includes an end-of-course survey and a course completion badge.
