MODULES - 3

  • Intro to micro:bit

    Students learn the basics of the micro:bit, such as how to light up and change the brightness of LEDs and how to use variables to write more versatile programs.

  • Program Control with micro:bit

    Students combine control structures, such as if/else statements and loops, with the micro:bit built-in and external sensors to write programs that react to the outside world.

  • Advanced micro:bit

    Students explore all of the capabilities of the micro:bit on their own as they research, explore, and teach their peers about new sensors.

What hardware do students need?

A micro:bit device each, or shared between pairs. This is a physical computing course: students write code that runs on the board and drives its LEDs, buttons and sensors.

What do students actually build?

Programs that perform tasks using the micro:bit's LEDs, buttons and basic sensors, applying basic programming concepts to a physical device.

Do students need programming experience first?

The course introduces physical computing using basic programming concepts, so it assumes some familiarity. If your students have none, Introduction to Programming with Karel and micro:bit or with Tracy the Turtle and micro:bit teach the programming first and then apply it to the device.

How long is the course?

About 50 contact hours, built to run as a quarter-long middle school course.

Which grade is it for?

CodeHS places it at 8th grade in the Illinois Middle School pathway. It is written for middle school generally.
