FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Arkansas Computer Science: Kindergarten course cover?

The course introduces kindergarten students to computer science through block-based programming in the CodeHopJr Playground. Students learn to use the mouse and keyboard, build step-by-step sequences, use events and loops, and create programs with multiple pages. The course also covers computing systems, online safety, research and data, and an introduction to artificial intelligence.

Which standards is this kindergarten computer science course aligned to?

The course is aligned to the Arkansas K-4 Computer Science Standards. Lessons that are required to fully meet the state standards list their standard codes beside the lesson title in the course syllabus.

Do kindergarten students need any computer experience before starting?

No. There are no prerequisites, and the course is designed to support all learners. It opens with lessons on logging in, using a mouse, and using a keyboard, so students build basic computer skills before they begin programming.

How long does the course take and how long is each lesson?

The course includes 36 lessons, each about 30 minutes long, designed to be taught across one school year. Concepts spiral across grade levels, so students can revisit and build on them the following year even if every lesson is not completed.

How are kindergarten students assessed in this course?

Most units end with a short two-question quiz that checks understanding of the unit's key ideas. Quizzes can be assigned digitally, played as a QuizBuzz activity, or printed for paper-based completion.
