Getting Started with CodeHop for Lower Elementary [2024]

This short online PD course is designed to help educators learn the ins and outs of using CodeHop for Lower Elementary. This course covers the student CodeHop interface, block descriptions, how to use each block in a program, how to draw or customize characters and backgrounds, and tips and tricks to use while creating programs in CodeHop.

  • Welcome to Getting Started with CodeHop for Lower Elementary!

    This introductory module provides an overview of the CodeHS professional development experience. Educators will explore key goals for the course, examine strategies for planning and pacing their teaching, and reflect on access and equity in computer science education. This module also sets the foundation for goal-setting and long-term success in teaching computer science.

  • Introduction to CodeHopJr

    This module introduces educators to CodeHop and the value of early coding education. Teachers will explore the goals and features of the CodeHop platform, learn how to get started, and understand how coding at a young age supports foundational problem-solving and creative thinking skills. The focus is on building comfort with the tool and recognizing its benefits for early learners.

  • Basic Programming Concepts

    This module guides educators in teaching basic programming concepts through CodeHop's visual coding environment. Teachers will learn how to introduce sequences, events, loops, and messaging in developmentally appropriate ways for young learners. The module also offers practical tips for organizing a coding class to foster exploration, collaboration, and creativity.

  • Storytelling with CodeHopJr

    This module helps educators use CodeHop as a tool for creative storytelling in the classroom. Teachers will learn how to guide students in creating animated stories, from simple scenes to original fiction narratives. The focus is on blending literacy and coding skills to support self-expression and digital storytelling.

  • Game Design with CodeHopJr

    This module introduces educators to game design using CodeHop as a fun and engaging way to teach coding concepts. Teachers will explore how to guide students through creating interactive projects like a river crossing game, moving targets game, and racing game. The focus is on fostering creativity, logical thinking, and problem-solving through playful, hands-on learning experiences.

  • Debugging in CodeHopJr

    This module equips educators to teach debugging skills to young learners using CodeHop. Teachers will explore common coding mistakes and learn how to present debugging challenges that help students identify and fix errors in their projects. The goal is to build resilience, critical thinking, and confidence in early coders.

  • Course Wrap-Up

    In this module, we will wrap up the course through a final reflection, workshop survey and certificate of completion.
