Students learn the basics of programming by giving Karel the Dog commands in a grid world.
Students will learn how to use basic commands, variables, and functions in their programs using the Python programming language. Recommended for early middle school.
Students explore different technologies and the impact they have on our world.
Students are introduced to network protocols and different strategies used to protect online information. Students learn about Internet etiquette and how to stay safe on the World Wide Web.
Students explore the intersection of art and technology by creating art programs using p5.js.
Students explore data and basic sheet functions to complete a project where they use a device to collect and analyze data to find an answer to a question they have.

This is a 31 hour course adapted from CodeHS's Mix and Match Middle School curriculum to meet the Tennessee Middle School Computer Science standards in an accelerated format. It introduces students to foundational computer science concepts through hands-on programming, creative coding, and digital citizenship projects.
This course is designed for Tennessee middle school students. There are no prerequisites, and it's built for beginners, though it moves at a quicker pace than the full-year course.
Tennessee educators asked for a quarter-long course that meets all Tennessee Middle School Computer Science standards. CodeHS curated and streamlined existing Mix and Match Middle School materials so every Tennessee standard is covered while keeping the course manageable within a shorter timeframe.

Students explore computing systems, create art with code, work with data, and program in JavaScript using Karel and Python using Tracy the Turtle. The course also includes a digital citizenship project where students design a Public Service Announcement on responsible technology use.
