What is the Interdisciplinary Computer Science: 6th Grade course?

This partial-year course integrates computer science into sixth grade mathematics, science, English language arts, and social studies while preparing students for more advanced computer science learning. Students strengthen programming and computational thinking skills through projects connected to grade-level academic content.

Do teachers or students need prior coding experience?

No. The course is designed for beginners and includes ready-to-teach lesson plans with a consistent instructional format, making it accessible for both classroom teachers and students who are new to computer science.

Do the lessons need to be taught in order?

Teachers should begin with the Getting Started with Coding unit so students become familiar with the CodeHop programming environment and develop foundational programming skills. After that, lessons from the math, science, English language arts, social studies, and Cross-Curricular sections can be taught in the order that best supports classroom instruction. The More Coding Lessons and Projects section is entirely supplemental and can be used whenever additional coding practice or enrichment is desired.

What is the Cross-Curricular unit?

The Cross-Curricular unit includes flexible coding lessons that can be integrated into any subject area. Projects such as Digital Flashcards, Digital Venn Diagrams, and Cause and Effect provide reusable coding templates that help reinforce classroom learning while continuing to build programming and computational thinking skills.

How is this course different from the earlier elementary interdisciplinary courses?

This course is designed as a transitional experience between elementary and more advanced computer science courses. While it includes fewer interdisciplinary lessons than earlier grades, students continue applying coding to math, science, English language arts, and social studies while learning more advanced programming concepts such as algorithms, debugging, functions, classes and objects, and larger project design.
