In this project, students will learn about different ways AI is making the world more accessible to everyone. Students will explore alt text generation and will compare their own alt text with alt text generated by an AI.

Project Description

Accessibility is all about designing things – physical spaces, digital products, information – to be usable by everyone, regardless of their abilities. The goal of accessibility is to remove barriers that might prevent someone from interacting with something or getting the information they need.

Here are some examples of accessibility in action:

  • Ramps and elevators in buildings: These allow people who use wheelchairs or have difficulty with stairs to access different levels.
  • Screen readers: This converts digital content into speech or braille for users who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Closed captions on videos: This allows people who are deaf or hard of hearing to follow the dialogue.

Another important accessibility factor is alt text, or alternative text. This is especially important for those who rely on screen readers, which translate on-screen text into speech or braille. In this project, students will explore alt text best practices, use AI to generate alt text, and reflect on the AI’s effectiveness.
