Make Real Mobile Apps on CodeHS
Teachers and students wanted to make apps on CodeHS. Now you can do that. And it’s awesome.
Our goal at CodeHS it to provide a comprehensive platform for schools teaching computer science. We’re building tools to let teachers and students be creative with the coding that they are learning. For a few years now we’ve had many requests along the lines of “Can I build apps on CodeHS?”
Now, you can.
Any graphics program you write in CodeHS can now be a real native app for iPhone or Android.
Any graphics program you write in CodeHS can now be a real native app for iPhone or Android. Behind the scenes we use React Native and Expo.
However, for students, they can write code just like normal on CodeHS, but then run their program on their phone. And for advanced students you can now submit your CodeHS apps to the real iTunes App Store or Google Play store. We’ve already submitted several demo apps that are like the ones students can learn to make in our courses. They are all available for download today on the Google Play store and the iTunes App Store
See the apps in the Google Play store and in the iTunes App Store.
To try it out right away you can download CodeHS Breakout for iPhone or CodeHS Breakout for Android. You can show these to your students as real mobile apps that they can make in their first Intro to Computer Science class!

Students can also submit their app to the CodeHS App Store as well, which is a much easier process, and will feature student created mobile apps.
This means if your students complete the Breakout game or Helicopter game in the Intro to CS in JavaScript course, they can use it as a native app. All the mouse events are converted to touch events. And it’s really easy to get started — everything you did before just works!

If students want to learn how to build React Native apps (which is a framework built by Facebook), you can write React Native apps in the CodeHS sandbox (click here to try, works even while logged out), and we are developing advanced curriculum for Building Mobile Apps with React Native that will be available by the 2018–2019 school year.
