Day 31 // 5/6/2015 // Hazard, Kentucky → Roanoke, Virginia

We met with KVEC and drove to Roanoke!

Today, we started off in Hazard, Kentucky where we met with a group of educators who are looking to bring in computer science classes to their area.

This is what we meet with schools and districts about every day, but I think there a few important points to highlight that came out of our meeting. In our meeting there was a clear focus why it is important to give students an opportunity to learn computer science. And what the discussion revolved around was creating and keeping the opportunity around technology and entrepreneurship locally.

Everyone knows the future is coming and it’s going to involve more and more technology. And the top educators want to prepare their students for the challenges and opportunities in that future. Coding is one of those core skillsets.

The opportunity of coding and of technology is something that can be part of any area and any school system. Right now, however, it’s not something that is associated with their area of Kentucky, but offering coding classes for students is the first step. Part of making the area around Hazard a place where there are technology opportunities is focusing on improving technology education.

Coding moves students from being consumers of technology to creators of technology. Coding combines a focus on problem solving, and a focus on creativity. This is the promise of bringing coding into high school education.
