🍎 CodeHS Back to School Guide
Back to school is around the corner! Check out the CodeHS Back to School Guide to help you set up for a year of teaching with CodeHS. This guide includes Week Zero lesson plans and more steps to make sure you’re ready for your first day.
📚 Website Critique
Start the year with design thinking! Have students explore real websites and reflect on how layout, color, and content affect the user experience. It’s a great way to introduce web design concepts to beginners and build a strong foundation for future projects.
For students coming in with some HTML/CSS experience, consider having them jump into the Tell a Story project. In this creative challenge, students build a multi-page site to share a fictional or real story using images, animations, and interactive elements. They can tell a story from their summer break, or what they hope to accomplish this school year!
🌈 Web Design Scavenger Hunt + Color Exploration
Another great activity to kick off the school year is the Web Design Scavenger Hunt. A no-code activity to help students start thinking like designers!
Have students explore their favorite websites to identify specific themed elements such as:
- 🎨 Color palettes that reflect the theme
- 📝 Font styles and sizes
- 🧭 Navigation layouts and responsive design
Then, connect the activity to the HTML Colors tutorial on CodeHS, where students can dive into how web pages use color codes like hex and RGB to control design. Challenge them to match a favorite fall color from a site they visited and recreate it in the tutorial’s color previewer.
This activity builds digital literacy and introduces key design vocabulary with no coding experience required!
