Igniting Curiosity and Creativity in Your Classroom with CodeHS Elementary AI Projects
The world of technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, and artificial intelligence (AI) is at the forefront of this revolution.
CodeHS Elementary has introduced a series of new AI projects specifically designed for K-5 classrooms, in addition to new AI curriculum for 6–12th grade and AI professional development for educators. Learn more.
Elementary AI Projects Available
These interactive projects on CodeHS aim to make AI concepts accessible by fostering curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking about how learning from data works.
With CodeHS’ Ready-to-Go Elementary lessons, teachers can prepare to use these projects in minutes! Each project includes a lesson plan, student-facing videos, discussion questions, and more to make prep easy.
Here’s a glimpse into the AI projects for each grade level:
Kindergarten — The Sorting Game
This project introduces students to the basics of pattern recognition and sorting different shapes and colors. Students will develop an introductory understanding of how computers can learn.
1st Grade — Machine Learning: What is a Blorg
This fun project introduces students to the concept of machine learning by training a model to identify a fictional alien species called Blorgs! Students will be able to explain how AI can learn information by being trained to identify an alien.
2nd Grade — Machine Learning: AutoDraw
This creative project allows students to draw simple sketches and pictures using AutoDraw, an AI-powered dragon tool. It’s a fun way to show students how AI can enhance creative projects and drawings.
3rd Grade — Machine Learning: Face Sensing
This project explores facial recognition and the use of AI to identify features. Students will be able to use Face Sensing blocks to explore machine learning in Scratch Lab. They can program the AI to recognize smiles, frowns, and other emotions!
4th Grade — Program an AI Chatbot
This project takes students into the world of conversational AI by creating a chatbot. Students will use lists to create a chatbot, store prompts and responses, and answer questions — allowing their chatbot to answer questions and engage in simple conversations.
5th Grade — Machine Learning: Teachable Machine
This project will give students hands-on experience in training and testing AI models! Students will be able to explain how training data affects the effectiveness of a machine learning model and train their own Teachable Machine model to demonstrate the role data plays in classification accuracy.
CodeHS Elementary’s new AI projects for K-5 are making AI accessible and enjoyable for young learners. These projects not only teach valuable technical skills but also inspire a lifelong love for learning and exploration in the world of technology.
