What is your background?

Unlike CodeHS students, I did not have the opportunity to take computer science in high school. I went into college thinking I was interested in studying medicine but that changed as soon as I took my first computer science course freshman year. I instantly fell in love with the problem solving aspect of computer science and quickly changed my major.

Before I started my senior year, I interned at CodeHS during the summer. I enjoyed the role so much, I started my full time job at CodeHS after graduation. From there, I moved from Software Engineer, to Product Engineer, to my current role, Engineering Manager.

What does a typical day or week look like in your role?

I spend a lot of my day making sure that other people on the team have the tools they need to do their job successfully. That can be in the form of coming up with project plans, meeting with other teams, or doing code review and supporting other engineers’ projects.

What’s it like working on a hybrid/remote team?

Even though my team is remote, I still feel like I know my team very well professionally and personally. We make sure to prioritize good communication so no one gets stuck just because they can’t turn to someone in person for help. We also dedicate time to chat and get to know each other personally during 1on1s and team meetings. I always look forward to our quarterly in person meetups because getting together in person is always extra exciting.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?

The most rewarding part of my role is knowing that I’m making it easier for students from all different backgrounds to learn and take an interest in computer science.

What is your favorite part of your role at CodeHS?

My favorite part of my role is thinking about the needs of the teachers and students. I like to plan out technical projects to improve their experience, whether they’re teaching or learning computer science.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in EdTech / at CodeHS?

My advice is to teach computer science! Being a teacher, whether it’s through being a TA or volunteering, is a great way to understand EdTech and computer science better.

The most rewarding part of my role is knowing that I’m making it easier for students from all different backgrounds to learn and take an interest in computer science.
