University of California Changes in A-G Categorization

By Evelyn Hunter, Curriculum Lead at CodeHS

In California high schools, computer science is now more than an elective!

The University of California has revised their A-G categorization so computer science classes are now eligible to count as a lab science (category D). We are very excited about this change, as this will encourage even more students to enroll in high school computer science.

What Does This Mean

The UC A-G requirements represent the approved high school courses students must take to be minimally eligible for admission to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems.

Previously, most computer science courses in California have been placed in the G-elective category. With this new change, computer science courses can be used in area D as an additional lab science. The University of California still requires two years of traditional lab or integrated science, but students can now count their computer science course as the recommended third year of lab science.

What’s Happening Now

Currently, all of the main high school courses on CodeHS are approved as G-electives. This means that if you’re a teacher or an administrator in a California school or district, your school can adopt our computer science courses to count towards the G-elective requirement for students.

We are in the process of re-submitting our courses to the University of California for the D categorization, and we anticipate that students will be able to take our CS courses under the D category in the 2019–2020 school year. We will make sure to share any updates!

With the lab science categorization, students may still count computer science towards their elective if they wish. Students may use any course approved in the A-F subject areas beyond those used to satisfy the requirements of the A-F subjects for their one year elective requirement.
