Meet a Tutor: Donovan Smith
Donovan Smith
Computer Science and Engineering Student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha
Tell us a little about yourself…
I am a computer science and engineering student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
When did you first start learning computer science?
I originally started teaching myself to code on my own about 5 years ago, and later when my high school began to offer computer science classes I took an AP Java programming course and got really interesting in coding.
Do you have any favorite programs or projects that you’ve built?
In my final year of high school I developed a game with a group of friends and entered it in a competition, we placed 2nd in state and later in the top 15 at nationals. I’ve teamed up with a different group this year to hope to get an even better ranking. Being the only one who actually knows how to program, a lot of the fun stuff falls on me.
How would you like to use computer science and programming in the future?
I’ve always really been interested in game design, but I’ve come to realize that’s not always the most viable option. I could really see myself doing anything as long as it involves programming in some way.
Fun facts about you?
I can turn my foot backwards. It’s a great party trick.
Favorite ice cream flavor?
Birthday Cake
Words of advice for the next generation of coders?
Always strive for efficiency with any program you write.
