Meet a Tutor: Connie Chen
Connie Chen
Computer Science and Business Administration Student at UC Berkeley
Tell us a little about yourself…
I am a second year intended business administration/economics and computer science student at Berkeley, but I am originally from San Diego. I volunteer at the local animal shelter and do marketing for Cal Performances, which works with artists from all over the world to put on performances on campus. I also handle a lot of event planning and volunteer recruitment for alumni networking events and the Overnight Stay Program for freshmen. I love playing piano (and learning instruments in general), learning new languages (programming and spoken), figure skating, and working with animals.
When did you first start learning computer science?
My senior year of high school in my AP Computer Science course.
Do you have any favorite programs or projects that you’ve built?
Nothing yet besides class projects
How would you like to use computer science and programming in the future?
I hope to find a way to combine my love for programming and marketing economics, perhaps as a product manager. I’d also really love to work for a start up or nonprofit in the future, and of course continue to teach students about programming. I’m also interested in cognitive science and artificial intelligence, and I hope to gain more experience with that through courses and projects.
Fun facts about you?
I have two chickens, Daisy and Cedar, that I decided to get on a whim a couple years ago.
Favorite ice cream flavor?
Taro/Ube or mint chip!
Words of advice for the next generation of coders?
“The sooner you start to code, the longer the program will take.”
Just kidding! But not really.
Remember to have fun, work hard, and keep an open mind. The field is constantly growing, and there’s still so much work to do and so much knowledge to learn. You have the key to the future, so use it responsibly. Work on projects! Think of something you want to build or improve and do a little bit every day, and soon enough you’ll have created something all on your own. Stay inspired by your surroundings, keep up with the news, and stay true to yourself.
