CodeHS Quizzes and How to Use Them
By Jennifer Campbell, CodeHS Curriculum Developer
Quiz, test, exam, assessment… No matter which word you like to use best, it’s no secret that teachers have a love/hate relationship with these! Assessments are usually met with groans and eye rolls from students but can provide teachers with very valuable information and insight into their learning. CodeHS offers ready-made, fully customizable, and offline assessments, to help teachers gauge where their students stand in terms of learning the content in their computer science course.
Check for Understanding Formative Assessments
Formative assessments are used to measure student retention and understanding. These assessments are critical for teachers to understand what concepts they should review and continue working on. CodeHS courses include a Check For Understanding (CFU) formative assessment after the main video in each lesson. This is a short assessment designed to confirm that students in fact watched the video and also understood the main concepts. Teachers can view student quiz progress in the gradebook to quickly identify which CFU’s proved to be the most difficult for students.
Teachers can also look more granularly at each individual question within the CFU to determine what topics and concepts need to be reviewed.
Additionally, CodeHS also allows for students to receive instant feedback to help them self-identify what they got incorrect and how to fix it.
Teachers have control of whether to provide instant feedback or not. Typically, instant feedback is suggested for formative assessments, but not for summative assessments.
Quiz, Midterm and Final Summative Assessments
Summative assessments are typically used to measure student learning at the end of a unit or course. They can be cumulative and include everything learned up to a certain point, or only include material for one specific unit. CodeHS offers summative assessments in the form of end-of-unit quizzes, midterms, and finals. End-of-unit quizzes are all multiple-choice and midterms and finals include a combination of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Offline (printable) assessments are available as well.
We also include many opportunities within each course for project-based assessments. Teachers can pair our in-course projects with rubrics for an alternative way of assessing students!
Love ’em or hate ’em, assessments are an invaluable tool for teachers and are here to stay. CodeHS takes this responsibility off of the teacher by providing a variety of ready-made assessments that are aligned to the material learned in our courses. Looking to create your own assessments?
