The CodeHS team made their way down to Georgia to visit schools, sharing their knowledge of computer science with students and educators alike. From hands-on coding challenges to insightful discussions about careers in tech, here’s a snapshot of our journey.

Stop 1: Arabia Mountain High School

We kicked off our Georgia visits at Arabia Mountain High School. At the school, we got to visit Shenica Mathieu’s engineering class. The class started with a brief intro lesson before handing things over to us. We began with a Kahoot game and an overview of CodeHS and the road trip, followed by a group activity: Hour of Code – Generating Beats with Code. The students were engaged and curious, particularly about Blake's travels and coding opportunities. We wrapped up by taking a tour of Blake's iconic pink van with Shenica’s class.

Stop 2: Midtown High School

At Midtown High school, we met with two fantastic teachers, Ms. Uzoka and Ms. Fuller. Ms. Uzoka’s AP CSP class, filled with 9th–12th graders that were eager to learn about the applications of computer science in today’s world. After our presentation and Kahoot game, we shared insights on careers in computer science, sparking thoughtful questions about AI and cybersecurity. Ms. Fuller’s AP CS A class was just as engaged, discussing career opportunities and their experiences with CodeHS. It was an inspiring day hearing students’ plans to explore computer science further!

Stop 3: Edwards Middle School

The visit to Edwards Middle School stood out from our other stops as we participated in their Career Fair, representing the field of computer science. Hosted by Mr. Stewart, who teaches CS each fall, the event introduced 7th and 8th graders to various career opportunities. Our outdoor setup featured the iconic CodeHS pink van and a Python coding challenge with prizes. Both grade levels were eager to learn about CS and explore careers in technology, with particular excitement from the Web Design students in Mr. Stewart’s class. Their enthusiasm made the event a memorable experience!

Stop 4: Riverdale Middle School

At Riverdale Middle School, we met with 6th and 7th graders excited to learn about CodeHS and the road trip. Organized by Ms. Adams, who hopes to reintroduce CodeHS in the spring, the visit was packed with questions about AI, CS, and van life. Groups of students toured the van, sparking interest in tech careers and coding.

Stop 5: JA Dobbins Middle School

Dr. Paris’s 6th-grade engineering class at JA Dobbins Middle School welcomed us with curiosity and enthusiasm. Our Kahoot game and road trip presentation sparked discussions about AI, gaming, and careers in CS. Students were especially excited to tour the van and share their personal interests in tech. We ended the visit with a group photo and plenty of smiles.

Stop 6: Hiram High School

The CodeHS team visited Hiram High School, where we visited Lashonta Flemister’s AP students, who were eager to meet us. We led the session with a Kahoot game and shared the journey with CodeHS, while we addressed questions about college, careers in CS, and how students could one day work at CodeHS. The class wrapped up with an outdoor photo session with the CodeHS van.

Stop 7: Pope High School

Pope High School gave us the opportunity to connect with several AP classes led by teachers, Richard G. and Kevin Frasier. Students impressed us with their questions about CS degrees, van life, and their app development projects. It was inspiring to see their enthusiasm for continuing their tech education into college and beyond.

Stop 8: Osborne High School

We made our way to Kyle Daniel’s FinTech class at Osborne High where students were hard at work on HTML projects for their startups. After a Kahoot game and a short presentation, we led the class in the Hour of Code activity, Creating Beats. Students enjoyed playing their beats aloud and learning how to track their progress through CodeHS.

Stop 9: Bethesda Academy

In Savannah, we were able to visit Bethesda Academy, one of the oldest schools in the U.S. With no formal computer science classes, this was a transformative experience for students. Despite most having no prior coding knowledge, they quickly picked up the basics with Tracy the Turtle. Their enthusiasm and progress were truly inspiring.

From career fairs to interactive lessons, Georgia’s students and educators showcased an incredible passion for learning and innovation. It’s exciting to see how computer science continues to shape young minds and open doors for future opportunities. We’re grateful for the warm welcome and can’t wait to see what these students achieve!
