Transitioning Back to the Classroom with CodeHS

undefined

Heading back to the classroom this fall and looking for some tips? There are many strategies and CodeHS resources you can use to make your in-person lessons interactive and engaging. From getting students talking with the Discussion Questions in the CodeHS Lesson Plans, to having students work in small groups to pair-program with our Real-Time Collaboration feature in the sandbox, read on for all of our tips!

Slides vs Video: each CodeHS lesson begins with a tutorial video. Try switching things up with the slides view to guide your students through the tutorial through a live lesson.

Leverage Lesson Plans: Lesson plans provide many resources that can be useful in the classroom to lead live discussion and activities, such as:

  • Lesson overview and activity suggestions for that lesson
  • Solution References
  • Detailed Problem Guides
  • Vocabulary
  • Handouts
  • Planning notes and Teaching Strategies (ex: suggestions of leading questions to use during example exercises)
  • Video Slides
  • Discussion Questions (with answers!)

Get Conversations Going with Discussion Questions: discussion questions are a great way to get students thinking and interacting with each other again. Included in every CodeHS lesson plan are detailed beginning and end of class discussions, perfect as bell ringers and exit tickets!

Make Time for Students & Communication: Set office hours or set aside time for Q&A during a lesson so that students can ask questions on specific activities. This not only will facilitate a routine for students, but also good communication which is always key. Encouraging face-to-face communication will help students get back into the swing of in-person learning.

Q&A Tip: CodeHS problem guides are really helpful during Q&A debugging!

Whether you’re fully in-person or in a blended setting, or even still virtual, we hope these tools and resources will help for a smooth Back to School experience.
