Welcome to “This Week in Learn to Code!” If you’ve already begun to learn, this is a chance to pat yourself on the back for having made a great choice. If you haven’t started yet, now is a great time to start!

  1. Game development studios need code-literate employees!

This article will come as good news to those of you who aspire to create games professionally. Ian Livingstone, formerly of Eidos (responsible for that little series that you might have heard of, Final Fantasy) is calling for education reform to help produce a more digitally literate populace. Every day I hear from CodeHS students who want to create games someday — learning to code is a great place to start! Check out our Demos page for some examples of games that we can teach you how to make.

2. You might just need to!

If you’re a high schooler in Chicago, you might just be required to learn to code! Over the next three years, Chicago will be creating and building out a coding curriculum as a requirement for all high schoolers in the city. Mayor Rahm Emanuel has several goals for this new curriculum, including inspiring students, and preparing them for the future economy.

3. You can Help code the future!

For these posts, I love bringing in at least one piece of new technology that strikes me as ultra-futuristic, and this week is no exception. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s General Robotics, Automation, Sensing, and Perception lab are using real life animal behavior, such as the way colonies of ants recruit and organize groups, to create software that allows drones to act as a swarm to solve problems and complete tasks. This is an awesome example of sci-fi technology being brought into the real world. Very cool!

Is there any science fiction tech you’re still waiting to see (maybe a hoverboard??) Have you created any great games in the CodeHS sandbox? Let us know in the comments or by tweeting to us @codehs!

That’s all for this week! Thanks for tuning in.
