The Internship: JavaScript from the Bottom Up
By Andy Bayer, Northwestern
We asked our summer interns to describe their experience working at CodeHS. This three post mini series will explore their real thoughts about what it was like to read, write & code.
CodeHS exceeded my expectations for an internship in every way. From the time I started working I was given projects that would make a real difference to teachers and students. I can open the site and see the features and changes I implemented over the summer, something my friends who worked at larger companies can’t do.
I learned more about web development in the 3 months I spent at CodeHS than I had in my first two years of college. I had the chance to learn JavaScript from the bottom up, both from working on the site and from conversations with other interns and coworkers. I also got to write a blog post about one of the fun problems I solved over the summer.
CodeHS was a small enough team that I had the chance to grab coffee with all of my coworkers. Everyone I worked with was as excited as I was about teaching computer science and I could feel that excitement every day.
I can’t recommend CodeHS highly enough to anyone considering working there. Do what I did and apply to be an intern, or become a tutor and help to teach students hands on. Either way, you’ll be part of a team doing something that really matters for a lot of students.
