The Internship: Awesome Projects
By Sean Schaffer
Hello, my name is Sean Schaffer, and I was lucky enough to be able to spend my summer interning at CodeHS.
During the first couple of weeks, I had CodeHS bootcamp, where the CodeHS team collectively welcomed me, and got me up to speed on all things CodeHS. During this time, I got to know everyone at the company with one-on-ones and meet some really cool people.
As my bootcamp ended, my first projects started and I was challenged to find an improvement I could make to the site. I believed I could improve the quizzes, and one of my first projects became improving the user experience(UX) of CodeHS quizzes. I wanted students to be able to click not just the radio buttons, but also the rows in which they reside. It was really cool to see some of my first projects go live — even a small UX improvement — and effect a large user base, something that you really don’t get to experience in school or on smaller personal projects.
After my first couple of projects were complete, I became integrated into the engineering flow. It was nice to be treated as an engineer and not as coffee errand code monkey. The engineering team is brilliant and super helpful, and always had time for me if I had a question or wanted their opinion on one of my projects.
Once I settled in, I was trusted with some larger projects, like Login with Google (blog post about that). Getting Login with Google live was one of the highlights of my summer . After all the hard work, going to the login page and being able to login with my Google account was very satisfying.
Overall I had a great internship at CodeHS.
