International Baccalaureate Computer Science for Standard & Higher Level
Announcing the New CodeHS IB Courses on CodeHS!
We may not have been able to do much traveling in the past year, but that didn’t stop us at CodeHS from living vicariously through the lives of our International Baccalaureate (IB) teachers and students! The IB Organization places an emphasis on the personal development of students by incorporating expansive critical thinking and pan-cultural approaches to problem-solving. Educational institutions referred to as IB World Schools are certified by the organization and implement these guidelines into their curriculum.
Course Overview
While the IB Organization’s guidelines cover a wide range of grade levels, CodeHS provides exam preparation courses for the Diploma Program (DP) which include students who are 16–19 years old. There are 2 separate courses: Standard Level and Higher Level.
Similar to AP CSP, the IB courses are language-agnostic, but students must complete the end-of-unit assessment in pseudocode developed by IB. Students will learn and practice coding in Java.
Standard Level
The IB Computer Science Standard Level course covers Java concepts. Students do not need to have prior knowledge of programming. The Java section of the course is highly interactive and engaging for beginning programmers. View the full Standard Level course overview.
Higher Level
The IB Computer Science Higher Level course covers the first year of a two-year sequence using Java concepts. While students do not need to have prior knowledge of programming, it is recommended that they understand algebraic functions and equations. The Java portion of the course is AP level and appropriately challenging.

Who are these courses for?
This course is for high school students who are enrolled in Computer Science for the Diploma Program with an IB World School.
“We’re very excited to offer a course for IB students to prepare for their examinations, as this is a paramount component of their certification. The goal is to assist students as well as the teachers who are dedicated to reinforcing the fundamentals of Comp Sci.” — Ryan Molyneaux, CodeHS Curriculum Developer
