Expanding Computer Science Education in Stockton, California Schools — Code Stockton Update

In January of 2018, CodeHS partnered with the Reinvent Stockton Foundation to launch Code Stockton, an initiative to expand high-quality computer science programs in Stockton, California schools. We committed to offering CodeHS Pro and professional development to any interested Stockton school during the 2018–2019 and 2019–2020 school years for free!

Raising Awareness about Code Stockton

In the beginning of the Code Stockton launch, we worked together with the Reinvent Stockton Foundation to formulate a plan of how to make the initiative the most successful and how to get the word out to as many teachers and schools as possible. Together, we reached out to superintendents, school administrators, and teachers to spread awareness about the opportunity.

Implementing Computer Science in Stockton Schools

To kick off the program, we hosted an in-person professional development workshop in June of 2018 at a Stockton high school where we had three teachers and three school administrators in attendance!

“I like the way it scaffolds the lessons so that the students learn the essentials before they are asked to apply them. “ — Richard Glass, Franklin High School

What does Code Stockton look like now?

We now have three Stockton schools using CodeHS heavily to build up their computer science programs. Two of the schools have been able to build comprehensive 6–12 pathways from the ground up using CodeHS to teach everything from our middle school Intro to Programming with Karel course to our AP courses. One school is now able to bring AP Computer Science Principles to their students for the first time ever.

  • Number of Code Stockton teachers: 6
  • Number of Code Stockton students actively using CodeHS: 469
  • Number of active class sections: 22
“Our students are loving CodeHS! Thank you for all of your support.” — Bryce Geigle, Chief Academic Officer, ABLE Charter School

Code Stockton will continue from now through June 2020. During this time, we are proud to continue our partnership with participating schools, provide classroom support and build out their computer science pathways!
