Day 4 // 4/9/2015 // Los Angeles
We met with schools and districts in Glendale, Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, and Banning Academies of Creative and Innovative Sciences!
The CodeHS team had a busy day zooming around LA and meeting with districts, charter networks, and teachers. We started off the day at Glendale Unified, and then headed over to Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, and then met with some teachers at the Banning Academies of Creative and Innovative Sciences.
1. There is a lot of excitement around computer science education
What did we learn today? That there is a lot of excitement around computer science education. We got to meet with many peole involved in all different parts of the education system — instructional coordinators, superintendents and teachers in the classroom. They all have great ideas and enthusiasm for what the opportunity to learn computer science can mean for their students.
2. There’s not one way to bring computer science to your school
We’ve seen schools start teaching and expanding their computer science programs organically, and we have also seen districts lead the charge to initiate or augment their computer science programs. The most success comes from grassroots excitement at the teacher level, and a commitment to a big vision for computer science at the administrative level. This is being led by passionate teachers, community members, and school leaders.
3. LA is driving in traffic
Maybe that’s a bit unfair. But we did cover lots of ground across our meetings over the last few days and you just have to sit in a lot of traffic all the time. I wonder what will happen when self driving cars come to LA.
