Computer Science Education Week: Day 1!

Welcome to Computer Science Education Week! This week, we hope to inspire you and your students by sharing some incredible applications of computer science that shape the world we live in.

  1. The Future of Fashion Could Involve Smart Computers

Imagine if your outfit could automatically change based on the situation that you’re in — going to school? Headed to the movies? Caught in the rain? Researcher Marcelo Coelho explores how computers programmed with your personal data and linked both to the people around you and to what you’re wearing, could react to your environment to create new clothing.

2. Computer Science for Social Good

Four students at Stanford University have co-founded the group CS+Social Good, a campus organization that focuses on the intersection of computer science and social impact. The group works with nonprofits, governments and NGOs from across the world. One group has been working with the Indian government to develop a website dedicated to tracking followthrough on campaign promises made by elected officials. The group’s President says that, “technology is one of the best ways to create social good simply because of the scale of impact.”

3. Can You Beat a Robot at Your Favorite Game?

Researchers at an artificial intelligence startup called Osaro have created a deep learning robot that can learn to master video games, just by watching a human play. And they do it quickly! Imagine if you could learn how to beat Pac-Man in just a couple of hours of playing.

Imagine coding a robot that could beat Pac-Man in just a few hours!

How many hours have you spent playing Pac-Man?

What are some ways that you can think of that computer science can have a positive social impact? How else can computer science and fashion intersect? What would you make an artificial intelligence robot do for you?
