CodeHS Updates Cybersecurity Lessons With Recent Real-World Cybersecurity Event Examples

In order to keep cybersecurity curriculum relevant and engaging for students, CodeHS has made some updates to cybersecurity lessons. Many of these updates feature recent examples of cybersecurity events so that students can make meaningful real-world connections with the content. A list of the updates can be found below.

Lesson: What is Cybersecurity?

  • The WannaCry Ransomware Attack activity reflected an attack from 2017. We have replaced this item with a more recent video that compares two recent ransomware attacks on city services in New Orleans and Pensacola. The title was renamed to City Services Ransomware and the student questions and teacher solution code have been changed.
  • The Internet of Things activity included a video from 2016. We have replaced this item with a more recent video that takes a look at the Internet of Things with a special focus on the importance of protecting its security.
  • The Cybersecurity and Connected Cars activity included a video from 2015. We have replaced this item with a more recent video that has students reflect on the risks of hackers infiltrating IoT devices. The title was renamed to Hackers vs. Smart Homes.

Lesson: Impact of Cybersecurity

  • Question one on the Impact of Cybersecurity Quiz was updated to remove a specific reference to the year 2020.
  • The Yahoo! Attack activity referenced an attack from 2016. We have replaced this item with a more recent video that has students contemplate mistakes made in a recent phishing attack. The title was renamed to Phishing for Your Info and the student questions and teacher solution code have been changed.
  • The Fighting Cybercrime activity included a video from 2018. This item has been replaced with an interactive game for students to explore. The title was renamed to Cyber Game. The corresponding reflection questions have been changed and have students reflect on what they have learned from playing the game.
  • The FBI Cyber Crime activity included a video from 2018. This item has been replaced with an interactive game for students to explore. The title was renamed to Cyber Crime Time. The corresponding reflection questions have been changed and have students reflect on what they have learned from playing the game.

Lesson: The CIA Triad

  • Question 1 on the CIA Connections activity was updated to remove a specific reference to the year 2017.

What is Cybersecurity? Quiz

  • Question 7 on the What is Cybersecurity? Quiz was updated to remove a specific reference to the WannaCry ransomware attack.
