This Week in Learn to Code — 12/19/2014

Welcome to “This Week in Learn to Code!” If you’ve already begun to learn, this is a chance to pat yourself on the back for having made a great choice. If you haven’t started yet, now is a great time to start!

1. You aren’t just learning to code!

This article speaks to some of the benefits of Computer Science that many people are not aware of. The author does a great job of equating “computational thinking” to literacy (Read, Write, Code!) in terms of it’s importance as a 21st century skill — and we definitely agree! The skills Computer Science helps students master go well beyond programming, and will have huge implications in the coming decades.

2. Technology has the power to enact change!

This article comes from South Africa. Africa’s online population is booming, and some smart people are taking advantage of that boom to create some really cool solutions for problems — such as packaging internet connected phones with apps designed to help aid workers stop the spread of ebola. What problems will you use technology to solve?

3. You can make cool projects, like this one!

Andrew Ng

Andrew Ng, a scientist known for his work in the fields of artificial intelligence, announced this week that he and a team at Baidu have invented a new method of speech recognition created with deep learning algorithms on a neural network. It should allow computers to do a better job of recognizing speech in crowded, loud areas. Very cool! What kind of programming do you think went in to this?

That’s all for this week! Thanks for tuning in.
