The CodeHS road trip is continuing through the Northeast, and each stop brings new insights, amazing educators, and engaged students. Here’s a look at some recent highlights from our school visits.
Stop 1: Concord High School (Concord, NH)
The fall foliage was in full swing at the start of our northeast adventures! In New Hampshire, our visit began at Concord High School’s CTE department, where our team met teacher and CodeHS Certified Educator, Lisa Marcou, who has been using the platform for over five years. Lisa mentors new computer science teachers in the area and was happy to help in any way.
The upperclassmen at the school were super engaged and all students were interested in majoring in computer science. They had worked previously with Turtle Graphics and were eager to show off their skills. Their enthusiasm for coding made this visit a great start in New Hampshire.
Stop 2: Conant Middle High School (Jaffrey, NH)
Later in the day, we visited Conant Middle High School in Jaffrey, where teacher Heather Welsh was teaching Python through Turtle Graphics. Heather and her students enjoyed the Pink Van Challenge, where they recreated the iconic CodeHS van in Turtle Graphics! This inspired Heather to expand on this activity by having students replicate other designs using Python.
Stop 3: Manchester Essex Regional High School (Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA)
The following day, we arrived in Massachusetts at Manchester Essex Regional High School, where David Kaufman, an experienced CodeHS user, greeted the team. During the visit, students worked on coding AI websites with the web design class, sparking questions and learning opportunities. The CTE director joined a class session and expressed excitement over the visit, noting that CodeHS had brought a fresh, engaging approach to computer science. Before the next school visit, we planned a quick trip to Maine to check off another Northeast state.
Stop 4: Methuen High School (Methuen, MA)
To conclude the week, we visited Methuen High School outside Boston, where Crystal Nautiff introduced the team to four classes, including a cybersecurity group. Crystal’s students were curious about different cybersecurity topics, and the team walked them through phishing prevention and Capture the Flag challenges.
Although it was a half-day schedule, Crystal appreciated CodeHS’s time with her students, marking a full month of the road trip with a productive stop. The journey’s next leg would involve a ferry ride to an island school.
Stop 5: Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (Oak Bluffs, MA)
The CodeHS pink van boarded a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, an island off Massachusetts’s coast. The team visited Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, where we met up with three CTE teachers using CodeHS.
Chris Connors, a teacher at the high school, introduced the team to eight computer science classes, and CodeHS even presented to a video editing class. The teachers expressed interest in expanding the school’s CTE program and incorporating more hands-on tech projects like Makey Makey and Micro:bits.
With these visits across New Hampshire and Massachusetts, we’re excited to continue the journey along the East Coast. Each school has brought new perspectives and unique opportunities to support teachers and engage students.
