CodeHS’s Hawaii Course 3A teaches the foundations of computer science and basic programming, with an emphasis on helping students develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Once students complete this course, they will have learned material equivalent to a semester college introductory course in computer science and be able to program in JavaScript. This course is currently in a beta version, so there will be updates and revisions before the 2019–2020 school year.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed specifically for districts and schools in Hawaii. This course is fully aligned to the Computer Science Teachers Association 3A standards adopted by the state of Hawaii. The curriculum is for beginners with no previous background in computer science. It’s highly visual, dynamic, and interactive making it engaging for new coders. This course is fully aligned to Hawaii standards for grades 9 and 10, but it is appropriately challenging for any high school student who has not previously taken a computer science course.

What do you learn?

The entirely web-based curriculum is made up of a series of learning modules that cover the fundamentals of programming. Each module is made up of short video tutorials, example programs, quizzes, programming exercises, challenge problems, and unit tests.

Here is an overview of the modules:

  • Digital Citizenship and Cyber Hygiene
  • Programming with Karel the Dog
  • Networks and the Internet
  • JavaScript and Graphics
  • JavaScript Control Structures
  • Functions, Events, and Lists
  • Final Project
