Dear Computer Science Teachers, Thank you!
62 school visits, 13,000 miles and we’re back!
Karel’s 2nd USA Road Trip began in April with the goal of visiting schools, teachers, and students all over the country to learn more about computer science education and to see first hand how CodeHS is being used. After lots of emails, planning, logistics, driving, and school visits, we are back in San Francisco.
Thank you so much to the many amazing teachers, students, and schools who invited us in to your classrooms!
We could not have predicted the enormous amount of excitement and interest in the Road Trip — we received over 800 requests for school visits! Though we couldn’t visit every school, we were able to visit 62 schools to run workshops, meet teachers, students, and administrators, run assembly presentations and visit classrooms.
Students rated our workshops a 9/10, and over 80% of students wanted to take a future computer science class!
Thank you again so much to the many amazing teachers,
students, and schools who invited us in to your classrooms!
At CodeHS, we work to provide you with amazing curriculum, tools and support to make sure you can run a best-in-class computer science class. However, the real work happens in the classroom, and we were blown away by the different ways teachers are incorporating CodeHS.
We visited every type of school — public, private, charter, vocational, home school, large schools, small schools, rural schools, urban schools, and everything in between — and we noticed that while there are many differences, in each school there are people working to bring the future of education to their students. We are thankful to be a part of that.
Over the course of the trip, thousands of students wrote their first computer program, and many others continued building amazing projects. Students are coding education games for those with disabilities, iPad apps for hall passes, and home-made virtual reality goggles.
We’ve visited over 100 schools and incorporated those needs and
feedback into the curriculum, tools and training that we provide.
What separates CodeHS from other programs out there is that we focus on building for teachers, students, and schools. That’s why visiting over 100 schools and incorporating your feedback into the curriculum, tools, and training that we provide is so important. Based on feedback from long-time computer science teachers, we built our custom content tools. Based on work with many new computer science teachers, we built a professional development course.
We were received by many warm welcomes from teachers, students and administrators alike, and we want to thank you for making CodeHS a part of your educational experience. We learned a lot from the stories of your own schools, communities, and classrooms about the challenges and opportunities in teaching computer science.
“interesting, challenging, fun, enjoyable, awesome program”
We collected lots of feedback from teachers and students and one student summed up her thoughts on CodeHS: “interesting, challenging, fun, enjoyable, awesome program.” And a coding skeptic who shared their opinion in classic high school style: “Honestly, I really thought it was pretty interesting”
Our workshops were rated by students to be a 9/10 and over 80% of students wanted to take a future computer science class!
You can see our day-by-day trip blog and this letter online as well.
We believe that coding is now a foundational skill that can provide great creative opportunities for students. We’re excited to keep working with all of you!
