CodeHS Web Design Insider: CodeHS.me updates and new Student Groups

CodeHS.me Websites Are Now Private by Default

CodeHS.me websites are now private by default. Also, public publishing of CodeHS.me websites is now limited to students whose teacher has turned it on for their section, which keeps CodeHS.me focused on student coursework and reduces the number of non-educational sites hosted on the domain that are accessible to other students. Teachers will be able to view their students’ work exactly as before without having to set the HTML program to public.

Teachers decide which sections can host public websites using the Public Student Websites section setting, and schools or districts can enforce all student websites to be private across their whole organization. Teachers can use our moderation app and tooling for further review and block or report other non-educational sites.

New Feature: Student Groups

Student Groups give teachers a flexible way to organize students within a section into learning groups. Teachers can create, rename, and manage groups, add or remove students, and view group details all in one place. Once groups are set up, teachers can filter by group across key tools like the Gradebook, Progress, Code Review, Quiz Scores, and more. This new feature is a CodeHS Pro Tool.

Vibe Coding: AI-Assisted Coding Built for Your Classroom (CodeHS Pro)

AI is becoming part of how people learn, work, and build. A classroom is a good place for students to learn to use it thoughtfully, and web design offers a fun, optional way to get started! With Vibe Coding, students practice evaluating what AI produces, identifying mistakes, and understanding the code behind what they build.

Students describe what they want to build, and an AI assistant generates or updates the code right in the editor. Then the real learning begins: students read, question, and refine the AI's code, and can ask it to explain any part along the way.

Guardrails built in:

  • Moderated chat: The AI declines requests unrelated to coding.

  • Full teacher visibility: Review every Vibe Code conversation.

  • You control access: When enabled by your district or school, you can turn Vibe Coding on or off for an entire section or individual students.

  • Student privacy: Vibe Coding is built into CodeHS and doesn't require students to create third-party accounts. Student data is not used to train AI models.

Three ways to use it:

  • Drop it into the Sandbox for quick, self-contained activities.

  • Add Vibe Coding assignments to the course you already teach.

  • Teach the full Introduction to Vibe Coding course for a structured, ready-to-go path.

Vibe Coding is optional – it isn’t required to teach web design, and the other projects in this newsletter don’t use it. District and school admins control whether it’s available from the AI Policies page in the Administrator Dashboard, so if you don’t see it, check with your CodeHS admin.

Create a Personal “Wrapped” Web Page

December is the season of "Wrapped" recaps from music and streaming apps! Students can design their own year-in-review web page highlighting their favorite songs, books, games, or class projects from 2026.

Turn the One-Page Profile project into an end-of-year recap!

This is a great way to practice the skills students have been building:

  • HTML structure: Organize their recap with headings, paragraphs, images, and links.

  • CSS styling: Customize colors, backgrounds, fonts, and layout to match their personal style.

  • Personal expression: Add photos, favorite moments, and highlights from the year.

It’s a fun way to revisit HTML and CSS skills while giving students a chance to reflect on the year and show off their creativity!

Choose Your Own Adventure!

Need an activity for fall or winter gap days? Try the Adventure Story project! Students will use their HTML and CSS skills to build a multi-page, choose-your-own-adventure website with fun storylines, interactive choices, and illustrated outcomes. This beginner-friendly, two-hour project is a great way to keep students creating and practicing their web design skills when your regular schedule gets interrupted by days off, or your students need a fun way to show off their creativity.
